The white supremacist rally in Charlottsville, Virginia, has accelerated plans in cities across the nation to remove statues honoring the Confederacy from public places. In Gainesville, Florida, a statue of a soldier was removed. In Baltimore the mayor and city council want to tear down and destroy all of the memorials. In Durham, N.C., protesters pulled down a statue. “We should not glorify a part of our history in front of our buildings that really is a testament to America’s original sin,” Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe said Monday. There are monuments to the Confederacy in 24 states, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
